About

How much can come from so little?

That's the question at the heart of Beauty In Math. A triangle and one small rule become a snowflake with an endless edge. A pen that only knows "forward" and "turn" draws spirals and stars.

A single dot on the left grows, step by step, into a sprout, then a small branching plant, and finally a large, intricate bloom of colorful branches, dots and translucent leaves.

The idea

Some of the most beautiful things in math aren't complicated at all. They come from asking a simple question in just the right way, then following it patiently to see where it leads.

This site is a place to collect those moments. Each piece starts with a picture, shows the little rule behind it, and then lets you change that rule yourself, because the surprise is even better when you make it happen.

"Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty."

A line often attributed to Bertrand Russell

Who it's for

Anyone curious. Plenty of people discover they enjoy math long after school, once it's about wondering rather than being tested. If that sounds like you, or if you've never thought of yourself as a "math person" at all, you're in the right place.

Younger explorers are welcome too, with a teacher, parent or other grown-up alongside. The pieces work well shown on one screen and played with together.

A project still taking shape

Beauty In Math is non-commercial. There are no ads, nothing to buy and nothing to sign up for. It's simply a growing collection of ideas worth wondering about, and it will change and grow over time.
